First docking for restored Shropshire Union Fly-boat

Saturn has been docked for maintenance and inspection for the first time since she was re-launched in 2005. With the co-operation of partners in The Saturn Project, British Waterways Wales & Border Counties, Saturn used the BW Ellesmere dry-dock – providing the unusual sight of an historic Shropshire Union boat on an historic Shropshire Union dock.

The work – mainly small repairs, fitting of further items and painting - was part of the Society’s planned long-term maintenance programme for the boat to ensure her future preservation. It was undertaken by society volunteers under the supervision of boatbuilder Adrian Polglase, who worked on the original restoration. Paint was kindly donated by Phil Speight of Craftmaster Paints.

Fresh off the dock, Saturn was used for filming as part of a television programme on the Victorian way of life, being produced by Lion TV for the BBC. Although the boat has featured extensively in news style programmes, this was the first commercial booking for Saturn. A new full-colour leaflet promoting The Saturn Project has recently been produced.

In 2008 – because of attending the IWA National Festival & Boat Show at Autherley Junction – Saturn will spend most of the year on, or close to, the Shropshire Union network. As well as the IWA Festival she will attend events at Ellesmere Port, Norbury Junction, Anderton, Audlem, Maesbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch. At these locations and in between she will be involved in educational visits and promotion.
